Dallas Light Rail Destination - MLK Stop - Ride the Green Line to Fair Park for the State Fair

125 Years of the State Fair of Texas

The State Fair is a fall tradition in Texas. It is a mixture of traditional and new attractions. Artists, businesses, carnival games and rides all mix with some of the most incredible food you will ever find. Don't look for subtle flavors and nuanced offerings from snooty waiters. This Fair has not left its agricultural roots, which is a great thing. I will give you three suggestions which should save you a lot of trouble:

1. Take the DART train and it will let you off at the front gate. I rode the red line to the St. Paul stop and switched to the Green Line (Buckner) to the MLK Stop. Make sure the train shows a green destination sign for Buckner or you wind up in another town.

2. Grab a "map and guide" at the information booth. You are going to need it.

3. The Fair operates on a coupon system to pay for rides, food, souvenirs , etc. It works out to a dollar a coupon. Do not buy a large quantity unless you want waste coupons. There are coupon booths all over the place.

Big Tex

Big Tex is the official spokesperson for the State Fair. He greets the crowd from his spot in the middle of the Fair. It's also in the middle of the food courts. For me, this is an old friend. I remember when my mom and dad took me to the Fair and there he was. He was dressed differently then. This was a lot of fun today and if you have a chance, go.

Jeep Wrangler, I really want one of these. I don't know what a city boy like myself would do with it. I still want it.

The Real Reason People Go to The Fair is the Auto Show

That is a little bit of an exaggeration; but, no one misses the models presented here. The cars are cool too. The auto show is housed in two buildings and spreads out side. The Centennial Building and the Automobile Building are housing the interior portions of the show. The way it worked out this year the Centennial Building had the wimpy cars, except for the Yamaha bikes and the historic cars. If you want the muscle cars go to the Automotive Building. The Chevy Volt had its own little lonely place. Be sure to visit because, people manning the booth looked really discouraged. No one was signing up to win one.

The Food

All Things Fried

My diet today consisted of:

1. R/C Cola, Corndog, and Cotton Candy [breakfast]

2. Orange juice and Deep Fried Bacon [Lunch]

3. Nutty Bar [Ice cream chocolate and peanuts.]

I really could not handle more than that. Number 1. is a traditional combination for me along with the stomach ache. It is worth it.

The Deep Fried Bacon was incredible.

It was hot, so I had an ice cream bar.

My choices included fried butter [ That sounds disgusting. ], fried beer or fried Margaritas, [ Remember, you do have to be 21 to order these items.], fried autumn pie [pumpkin], Deep fried Texas Salsa, [i am not kidding.], and other stuff. There is a list on the link in the first paragraph. This place means it when they call this the international food court.

There is just too much for one person to sample. So all my fellow Texas Hubbers, help me out in the comments.

Fair Park

Fair Park is actually open all year round and is worth a visit after the Fair is over. There is a Vietnam Memorial by the entrance. It is located so that it is away from the crowds and noise. If you go, stop by and look at the flags people leave by names.

The State Fair ends October 23. Fair Park and the museums will be open but the State Fair will have packed up and left.

Oops - The Bangles will be there on the 22, not the 24th.

How long does the fair stay open? I'll be in the area the first weekend in November. My Mom grew up in Irving, and she had such fond memories of having a holiday from school on the opening Day.

The Bangles are playing at the fair on the twenty fourth. I am seriously considering going again. There is too much food for one trip. There was a Cajun booth serving grilled alligator tail, and I have not had that in a while.

I've been eagerly awaiting this hub! The fried salsa sounds good, but what wouldn't be good after wrapping in masa? Same with the autumn pie -- pumpkin, ginger . . . Delicious. Even the fried Kraut ball -- except the sauces are a little weird. But -- the Walking Taco served in a Dorito bag. Lettuse in a chip bag? I draw the line there. Too me, a Dorito is like a Cheeto -- if they stain your fingers when you eat them, what must they be doing to your insides?
